One-Number Annual Budget
The One-Number Annual Budget is the organization's operating budget for one fiscal year. It is the amount of money needed to maintain basic daily operations and includes things like rent, salaries, and program costs.
The annual operating budget does not include pass-through income or expenses. For example, money your organization received through donations and then re-granted to other organizations is considered pass-through money and should not be included in your operating budget.
Calculating Your Annual Budget
To determine your one-number annual operating budget, first find the sum of your organization’s functional expenses. The functional expenses lines include salaries and employee benefits, fees for services, supplies, and technology, office expenses, advertising, and fundraising expenses.
Next, subtract all grants and assistance made to domestic and foreign organizations, governments, and individuals from your organization’s total functional expenses.*
*If you’ve already filed Form 990 for your organization, you can use the report to help you calculate its functional expenses. Find The Functional Expenses section in Part IX, lines 1-25, in Form 990 or Part I, lines 10-17, of Form 990-EZ.
